Office of Public Safety Communications (OPSC)
NTIA’s Office of Public Safety Communications (OPSC) provides leadership and support for the coordination, interoperability, and improvement of the Nation’s public safety agencies in their adoption and implementation of advanced communications technologies, including AI and Next Generation 9-1-1. It also supports the First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet Authority) with its efforts to deploy, operate, and maintain the nationwide public safety broadband network. OPSC oversees the Public Wireless Supply Chain Innovation Fund (Innovation Fund), a grant program aiming to bolster national security, strengthen the market with trusted suppliers, and drive wireless innovation.
OPSC manages FirstNet implementation activities on behalf of the Commerce Department and NTIA. These include:
- Conducting an annual FirstNet Authority fee review and approval
- Soliciting and vetting candidates for the FirstNet Authority Board on behalf of Secretary of Commerce
- Facilitating the FirstNet Authority quarterly monitoring cycle, including FirstNet Quarterly Implementation Reviews with NTIA Leadership
- Facilitating and maintaining Standard Operating Procedures regarding NTIA and FirstNet Authority coordination.
